Photographer
Ciarly began her journey into the art of photography in 1980 with a Nikon SLR. She discretely placed her subjects at ease with engaging conversation for that moment in their lives. The resulting images demonstrate her tranquil approach to photography by capturing character and life experiences reflected in faces and gestures. Recent work has conveyed her grasp of the beauty of cloud formations heightened by striking sunrises and sunsets.
Exhibitions of her work include the Blank Wall Gallery in Athens, Greece, Glasgow Gallery of Photography, Scotland and PH21 Contemporary Photography Gallery in Budapest, Hungary.
Sculptor
Working primarily with wall mounted wood assemblages combined with mixed media, she maintains a minimal approach to clean lines, controlled chaos, extraordinary color and pattern. They began as compact but have expanded to a larger more intensified scale. These dimensional pieces display the definitive characteristic of directing the eye to a distant terminus on the flat plane to which it is mounted. Her work continues to evolve with the use of more varied materials, i.e., metal, feathers and leather.
Recent collaboration with a furniture maker resulted in the enhancement and playful finish to normally rigid multi-component refractory tables and benches.
Biography
As a multi-faceted artist, Ciarly was first influenced by the regional culture, beauty of tropical forests and mountains with an upbringing in Central America. Her subsequent education and career path travelling extensively throughout North and South America helped develop an understanding and respect for the many different civilizations and ethnic groups.
Life experiences in New Orleans, as well as with the unique South Louisiana Cajun & Creole traditions nurtured a yearning to explore further afield. Contributing to her evolving skills was the American Southwest, its Native American artists and the desert and mountain landscapes presenting endless color and form.
